Updated Question Response Status Mapping
We are updating the categorization of unanswered questions in survey responses to make response reporting clearer and more accurate.
Previously, several different scenarios were grouped under Not Answered. With this update, we are removing "Not Answered" and introducing a clearer status: "Not Shown".
This helps distinguish between questions that were shown to respondents but left unanswered, and questions that were never shown to them.
Updated Status Mapping
Scenario | Current Behavior | New Behavior | Change |
Respondent clicks the Skip button | Skipped | Skipped | No change |
Respondent moves forward without answering, either by using the arrow button/key or by scrolling to the next question | Skipped | Skipped | No change |
In nested questions, such as Matrix, some rows are left unanswered | Not Answered | Skipped | Updated |
The question is not shown because of the survey/display logic | Not Answered | Not Shown | Updated |
The question was added to the survey after the response was already collected | Not Answered | Not Shown | Updated |
Respondent drops off before reaching the question in a partial submission | Not Answered | Not Shown | Updated |
Status definitions
Skipped
A question will be marked as Skipped when it was shown to the respondent, but the respondent did not provide an answer.
This includes:
- Clicking the Skip button
- Moving forward without answering using the arrow button/key
- Moving forward without answering by scrolling to the next question
- Leaving some rows unanswered in nested questions like Matrix
Not Shown
A question will be marked as Not Shown when it was not presented to the respondent.
This includes:
- Questions hidden due to survey/display logic
- Questions added after a response was already collected
- Questions the respondent did not reach because they dropped off midway through the survey
Notes
- Not Answered will no longer be used for new responses after this release.
- Older responses will continue to follow the previous behavior.
- This change applies only to responses collected after the release.
- Historical responses will not be remapped.
- Reports may show both old and new behavior if the selected date range includes responses collected before and after the release.
